Warming up for June’s Royal Sutton Fun Run!

Read moreMichael’s uncle, 92-year-old Richard, was living independently in sheltered accommodation in the North West of England.
While he had some limited support available, it became clear towards the end of last year that Richard would benefit from more frequent, hands-on care – particularly as Michael lived over two hours away and was unable to regularly visit.
Recognising this, Michael arranged for Richard to move to a care home in Wylde Green, which offers 24/7 on-site support.
However, it was also clear that Richard would need extra personalised assistance beyond the in-house team. That’s where Nexus Care Services came in.
Initially, Nexus carers visited Richard four times a week around lunchtime, helping him get to the dining room, carrying out light cleaning tasks, and ensuring he was settled comfortably after meals.
Over time, as Richard’s needs evolved, Michael worked closely with Nexus to adjust the support.
Now, on three of those four days, carers spend extra time assisting Richard with personal care – including helping him with a shower, ensuring he’s dressed in fresh clothes, and giving him a wet shave.
“It’s working really well,” says Michael. “He’s happy. He’s used to the idea of someone else helping him, and he looks and feels much better for it.”
One of the key things Michael values about Nexus is their proactive approach.
“They don’t wait for me to tell them there’s a problem,” he says. “They tell me if they spot something. And if I ring Sam and ask for a change, the answer is always yes. He makes it happen, even at short notice.”
For Michael, knowing that Nexus carers are checking in on Richard daily has been a huge relief.
“Before, I was relying on phone calls to gauge how he was,” says Michael. “At 92, even without a dementia diagnosis, he’d often forget things. Now, I know he’s never left for more than a few hours or overnight without someone popping in. I’m much more relaxed knowing someone is there regularly, keeping an eye on him.”
The personal touch has made a big difference to Richard too. Though he isn’t someone who naturally seeks out social interaction, these brief, friendly visits give him just enough human contact to brighten his day without overwhelming him.
For Michael, Nexus Care Services stands out for its proactivity and flexibility.
“It’s hard to imagine how it could be going better,” says Michael. I would recommend Nexus without hesitation. Sam, in particular, has been incredibly helpful throughout.”
