Angela and Katherine’s* Story

Angela had never arranged carers for her mother, 93-year-old Katherine, before. However, when she noticed Katherine was growing increasingly tired and forgetful – to the point of forgetting to eat or take medication – she knew something had to change.

“It took about nine months to persuade my mother to have a carer,” Angela said. “Then when I left mum’s flat to get in the lift, someone walked past me and she had “Nexus” on her uniform. I spoke to her, and she was so lovely.”

Angela was touched by the Nexus carer’s genuine interest in her mother, which went beyond a simple promotion of the service fees.

“She asked me about Mum and what Mum needed, and she gave me her card. That inspired me to call up and see what Nexus could offer.”

Angela and Katherine started with arranging a lunchtime visit for just for half an hour every day. Nexus carers cook hot meals for Katherine, remind her to take her medication, and provide much-needed socialisation.

Angela has noticed that Katherine, who now rarely leaves her flat, is “brighter” since receiving daily home care visits from Nexus.

“She is definitely eating more, and she is now taking her medication.

“Even though I’m only around the corner, I’m not that fit myself and I can’t commit to visiting Mum every day – so to know that somebody’s been every day has absolutely given me peace of mind.”

Angela is impressed by the quality of care provided for her mother.

“I’ve always had the impression that they’re not rushed – they’re all very caring, they spend time with Mum, and they’re focused on her.”

Angela also appreciates Nexus’s quick, open communication.

“One of the carers noticed that Mum was not eating all her meals. She told the office, and the office rang me and told me.

“If I’ve had to ring the office, the phone is always answered very quickly.”

Receiving a rota means Katherine knows who to expect each day, which Angela finds “very reassuring.” Katherine has a good relationship with her carers (who include Karen and Emma): “She says all the ladies are lovely.”

Angela has no hesitation in recommending Nexus Care Services – in fact, she has already had the chance to do so for a neighbouring elderly gentleman.

“I was talking to his son on Saturday, and he’s not very happy with his carers. So, I told him what I thought of Nexus, and I gave him one of Nexus’s cards.

“You definitely get the level of care that you pay for – and I want to pass on my thanks to Mum’s carers.”
