It’s about the little things in life – and in care

By Samuel Court, Director at Nexus Care Services

Everyone is focused on the big issues in care, including how to provide more services to more people.

However, the dignity of those in care is just as important – and this means understanding the little things that make our clients happy.

Taking care of such small, simple things may seem insignificant – but it can be truly transformative.

Little cares, little joys

Care is about more than just dressing, washing, and doing household chores.

It’s about getting to know the people we are caring for. It’s about forming a meaningful relationship between the carer and the person receiving care. It’s about understanding what will bring them not only comfort, but joy.

Understanding the small things that matter to a person – whether it’s how they like their cup of tea, their favourite TV shows to discuss, or what they like to eat on certain days – makes the biggest difference to the quality of care.

For example, one of our clients loves Elvis Presley – so her regular carer decided to surprise her with a beautiful photo of the rock ‘n’ roll megastar.

It’s moments like these that make care truly special, both for the person receiving care and for the carer.

As the cousin of another client said: “Those extra little things […] make all the difference.”

The relationship between the carer and the client is what matters most, and this must not be forgotten in the business aspects of care.

Our team have a simple motto – the client comes first, always – so the little things that matter to our clients, matter to us.
