Family values are the foundation on which great home care is built

By Tinga Umera, Managing Director, Nexus Care Services

What makes home care exceptional? An organised and empathetic management team, a talented and flexible care team and a reliable, cost-effective service are all essentials, but they also need a solid foundation.

For us at Nexus, our family values form the base on which all facets of our community support are built – reflected in our shortlisting for the Midlands Family Business Awards 2024!

Celebrating the supportive community of family businesses in the region, the awards recognise the huge impact that family-run enterprises have on staff, clients and the wider area.

In our view, this is exactly the form that family values should take – extending beyond the confines of homes and offices and into the wider community.

Our promise to clients

We make a promise to all clients based on our family-first values, ensuring they receive:

Our ‘yes’ culture makes sure that all clients receive the care that they need and feel like a member of the family.

The Nexus family

From our Founder John Court, Nexus has grown within the community and now incorporates several of John’s family members – including two of his children, Samuel (Business Development Director) and Elizabeth (Finance Manager), Samuel’s partner Monica (Events Manager) and his niece, Susan Featherstone (Recruitment Manager).

From this foundation, we have built an approach to care that extends to treating all staff members like part of the family.

In doing so, we display implicit trust in each and every one of our carers – investing ourselves in their development and experience with Nexus.

It provides us with the opportunity to offer enhanced support for our dedicated team. Alongside our team members’ professional development, we also invest in their mental health and wellbeing.

We’ve formed valued partnerships with external counsellors, providing our team with an impartial and friendly listening ear. We also make sure that colleagues who work early shifts have support for their children if they need it, with a paid-for breakfast club!

Additionally, we are able to offer an open-door policy in the office, encouraging all staff to speak to another member of the team when they need support, in addition to 1-to-1 support.

This empowers our team to deliver a high standard of care, seek out progression opportunities and fully engage with the individual needs of clients – supported by our training offering, incorporating medication management, learning disability management, basic life support and in-house refresher courses on a wide range of technical skills.

We credit our family-feel approach with our success in becoming a leader in home care and a fierce advocate of its transformative impact on clients, with clients and staff feeling that they are heard and understood in a way that we couldn’t achieve without this approach.

Engaging with the community

Our family values extend beyond individual clients’ homes and into the community. We prioritise person-centred care, tailored support and independence, helping our clients to optimise their quality of life in all areas.

One of the ways we demonstrate this and help our clients build new relationships is by providing community-oriented experiences that bring people together.

Born out of Covid-19 and the isolation that many elderly people experienced during this time, Nexus Events has certainly created a unique position for us in the communities we support – overseen by Monica, our talented Events Manager!

Supporting one of our core aims of combatting loneliness and isolation in those receiving care, our Events service helps clients to socialise and stay active, with excursions including:

We’ll be launching our new ‘Turkey and Tinsel’ break at Christmas 2024, giving our clients the opportunity to celebrate in safety and comfort!

This unique service has also helped several people fulfil long-planned trips overseas with the support of carers, including Beryl – who at the age of 91 travelled to Florida in 2023 with our help to visit her great-grandson – which would not have been possible without our unique, family-first approach.

Getting out in the community

Beyond our work with clients, our team are dedicated to supporting some incredible charities that align with our person-first, family-centred approach to care.

Most recently, we were proud to participate in the Big Hike in support of Cancer Research UK, raising funds and awareness for its fantastic community work for those with cancer and their loved ones.

Our intrepid team took on the challenge of completing a 10-kilometre hike in the stunning (but steep) Peak District in less than two hours – gaining a total of 219 feet of elevation! The Nexus team has a long history of getting active for charity, including taking part in fundraising races for the Stroke Association.

We have also been active in holding coffee mornings in support of Macmillan, and encouraging members of our team to get involved in ways that align with their interests.

I took part in the Race Against Dementia in January, with Nexus making a generous donation to support our collective efforts against dementia, quickly following this up with a 10-kilometre run for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Alongside some incredible friends, we completed the race and raised £3,000 for this wonderful charity.

At the end of the day, we incorporate family values and community support into everything we do – from supporting our internal team to fundraising for external organisations.

Only by taking this truly holistic approach can our clients, their loved ones and the wider community reap the benefits of Nexus and our family-first support.
