The Employment Rights Bill and progress towards stability in the care sector

The recent King’s Speech grabbed our attention, particularly the legislation that was set out in the Employment Rights Bill.

The Bill aims to remove exploitative employment practices, including the widespread use of zero-hour contracts.

We wholeheartedly welcome this move and have already made steps to move away from this particular model of employment.

The challenges of zero-hour contracts

Zero-hour contracts have long been used across companies in the country, and the care sector was no exception.

While they do provide flexibility, it is often at a cost to carers and the quality of care delivered.

These contracts offer no guaranteed hours, leaving carers in a precarious position where financial stability is a worry and job security is minimal.

This uncertainty can lead to high stress and burnout among carers, ultimately impacting the level of care provided to those who depend on these essential services.

For clients, the instability of zero-hour contracts means frequent changes in caregivers, which can disrupt the continuity of care and undermine the special relationship of trust that is so vital in the care relationship.

Securing stability

We have long recognised these challenges and have taken the step of moving away from the industry-standard zero-hour contracts.

Instead, we have introduced a revolutionary employment model that promises to bring stability and security to our dedicated team of carers.

Our team have been given the opportunity to sign up for a new full-time contract that guarantees a 40-hour work week over five days, with rotas completed 14 days in advance.

This new choice ensures that our carers have a reliable schedule, allowing them to plan their personal lives more effectively and enjoy a healthier work-life balance.

By announcing schedules two weeks in advance, we provide our team with the predictability they deserve.

Competitive compensation and benefits

To reflect the skills and dedication of our carers, we offer a compensation package that is among the best in the market.

Our carers receive a guaranteed salary of £26,000 per year, with the potential for overtime.

Additionally, we provide a unique car allowance of £2,000 per year to cover the costs associated with using a personal vehicle for work.

This market-leading salary and car allowance ensure that our carers are financially secure and valued for their hard work.

Beyond financial compensation, we are committed to the well-being of our staff by offering a great benefits package.

This includes weekly pay, ensuring a stable and regular income, and the security of a formal contract that provides legal protection.

We also offer flexible scheduling, professional development opportunities, mental health support through external partnerships, and additional benefits such as four free uniforms each year.

A new standard for the care industry

We believe our approach will benefit not only our company but for the wider care sector in general.

By setting a new standard for employment, we are leading the way in ensuring that carers are supported, valued, and given the stability they need to provide the highest quality of care.

We are proud to lead this charge, providing our carers with the stability, security, and support they need to thrive.

If you or someone you know is interested in a rewarding career in the care sector but has been worried about job stability, full-time contracted carer positions with us are available now.
