91-year-old great-grandmother reconnects with US family thanks to Nexus Events

A 91-year-old great-grandmother from Sutton Coldfield has enjoyed the trip of a lifetime to America and has met her great-grandson for the first time with the help of Nexus Events.

This unique service, which is part of the wider Nexus Care Services group, helped Beryl to make the flight to Florida, where her extended family were enjoying a family gathering.

The nonagenarian, originally born in London, hadn’t seen her son for some time and so turned to Nexus Events, having previously been on other supported trips with the Sutton Coldfield headquartered care company.

Monica Paraschiv, part of the Nexus Events team, supported Beryl ahead of her trip to arrange it and Lisa Power assisted her with her day-to-day routine and the travelling required to meet her family.

Thanks to her support, Beryl was able to enjoy some lovely meals and dip her toes in the sea at the beautiful beaches of St Petersburg, Florida. One of the key highlights was meeting her great-grandson, Julian, who was born in March.

Speaking about her trip and Nexus’ help, Beryl said: “I couldn’t have done it without Nexus. Lisa my carer was very efficient, listened to my needs on the whole trip and was there when I needed her.

“Monica was wonderful planning it all and Sam, another member of the Nexus team, was marvellous taking us to the airport and helping us check in.”

She added that those putting off similar trips should seek out help and use the services of companies like Nexus to fulfil their wishes.

Nexus Events was set up by Nexus Care to combat loneliness, improve social interaction and make dreams come true for elderly members of the community.

The company identified that this was a service that was needed by many and added a greater variety and depth to the rest of the home care services it already delivers across the UK.

Reflecting on the success of the trip, Events Manager Monica said: “Beryl had a great time and made some incredible and lasting memories during her time in the USA.

“We were delighted to play a role in her meeting her great-grandson and enjoying everything that Florida has to offer.”

Tinga Umera, Nexus Care Services’ Managing Director, said: “Person-centred support is at the core of what we do.

“Through Events we were able to offer holistic support to our client and connect her to activities and family that she loved and enjoyed. We are honoured to have fulfilled that wish for Beryl through Nexus Events”.
