A day in the life of a Sutton Coldfield carer

No two days look quite the same, but a typical shift might involve visiting several clients across Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding area, spending dedicated one-to-one time with each person rather than rushing between appointments.

You might start the morning helping someone get washed, dressed and ready for the day, before preparing breakfast and making sure medication is taken on time. Later visits could involve a walk to the shops with a client who needs support to stay mobile, some light housekeeping, or simply sitting and talking over a cup of tea. Every visit is different, because every client’s needs and personality are different.

One of our carers described it like this:

“I’ve been with Nexus for a while, and it’s been a pleasure being part of Nexus. For the team in the office especially I would like to personally thank them as they listen and understand the concerns you may have whether it’s to do with the rota/run or anything in the field they will listen and adjust accordingly to the situation and act upon it!! I can’t speak for anyone else but my voice has always been heard! They say it takes two to tango – if you’re good the people surrounded by you are good! That’s my inspiration for looking forward everyday coming to work for Nexus.”

What you’ll be doing

As a carer in Sutton Coldfield, you’ll visit clients in their own homes and help them stay independent, safe and comfortable.

It’s hands-on, practical work, and every visit makes a genuine difference to someone’s day. Depending on the client, this might include:

Personal care, supporting dignity and respect

Medication assistance and prompts

Meal preparation and dietary support

Mobility support, using equipment safely

Light housekeeping and daily tasks

Companionship, conversation and emotional reassurance

No two visits are quite the same, and you’ll build real relationships with the people you support. That’s usually what carers say they value most about the job.

Is a career in care right for you?

Care work suits people switching careers from retail, hospitality, driving or caring for family at home, because what matters most is how you are with people. You don’t need care experience to start, and the paid training covers the practical side.

Good carers share a few qualities: reliability, patience, empathy and a genuine interest in people. If that sounds like you, our piece on what makes a good carer is worth a read before you apply.

Two things we need from every applicant:

  • A full UK driving licence and use of your own car. You’ll be visiting clients across Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding area, so this is essential, not preferred
  • The right to work in the UK. We’re not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role

Training and support at Nexus

You don’t need previous care experience to apply. We provide paid training when you join, including support to complete your Care Certificate, with ongoing development once you’re in post. You’ll also have one-to-one support from our Employee Welfare Manager throughout your time with us, regular check-ins with your manager and access to mental health resources whenever you need them.

We treat care as a career worth building. Your Care Certificate is the first step, and carers who want to go further can move into senior carer, training and office roles, with further qualifications supported along the way.

Long service is recognised at two, five and seven years, and in 2025 we celebrated 11 carers reaching those milestones.
