Funding home care: Here’s what you need to know

We understand that planning home care often comes with big questions about cost and how to fund it.

At Nexus Care Services, we’re here to make things simpler by helping you explore all your options.

Private funding and direct payments

Most people requiring care either pay privately or use direct payments from their local authority.

If you’re funding your own care, we recommend checking first whether you’re entitled to any benefits or financial support, as you might be surprised at what’s available.

If you’re eligible for social care funding, you can choose to receive a personal budget, which your local council can:

  • Manage on your behalf
  • Pay directly to a care provider like us
  • Or give to you (or someone you trust) as a direct payment so you can choose your provider and top up the amount if needed

We accept both direct payments and local authority payments and can help you use your funding to build a care package that meets your needs and your budget.

NHS continuing healthcare and personal health budgets

Some people with ongoing complex health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare.

If so, you’ll be offered a personal health budget, which is money provided by the NHS to fund a package of care.

This can be paid directly to you or managed jointly with the NHS, giving you more control and flexibility.

Financial assessments: do you qualify for help?

If you’re unsure what you’re entitled to, your local authority can carry out a financial assessment. This will look at your:

  • Income and savings
  • Property and pensions
  • Benefits and other assets

In England, if your assets are under £23,250, you may qualify for full or partial funding. The local council will then confirm whether:

  • They pay for all of your care
  • They contribute towards your care
  • Or you are expected to fund your care in full
